Comments: I was born in Kanawha Valley Hospital in 1941 and grew up in Charleston. I no longer dwell there, but get back occasionally to visit family. Wish I could do it even more often. Almost every photo on your site triggers a petite madeleine or two. . .or more. I had a Daily Mail paper route downtown in my late adolescence. And I can recall every stop on that route as if it were yesterday. I had several subscribers in the Security Building on Capitol Street. On the ground floor there was a concession stand and the man who ran it was blind. He informed me one day that he could FEEL the difference between all paper currency denominations. Blew my mind! There was a barber shop in the basement but I always patronized the Lyric Barber Shop on Lee Street whose schtick was a very light-skinned troupe of barbers who snipped away at a strictly white clientele.

Comments: Stumbled across your site while looking for some "stock" Charleston photos for an 80th birthday iMovie and slide show. I was absolutely thrilled to see the photo of the "haunted house" across from Roger Dean Chevy. We lived in Gates Place which backed up to Roger Dean's for a LONG time. I was always very curious about that house. (I also went to Mercer elementary.) I left Charleston in 1972 after graduation from CCHS.

Comments: Good Evening!
Where is the cemetery you described as being on Penns Ave? I worked for years at Westmoreland Place. I used to walk the length and breath of the neighborhood when I needed a break from my work. But, I have no idea where it is. Thanks!!!

Comments: Hi Jerry,
I have been through your whole web site. I wish you could do 16 updates a day. I am from Robins, Wilson, Stonewall, WVSC, WVU and BGSU. I live in Toledo now. Was surprised to see, there are people who don't like you. What a shame. May they mature. Keep up the good work. Hello to Gary and Lori. God bless the Kanawha valley.

Comments: Thanks for the pictures of Rock Lake. I loved it there in the 60s. I met my first girlfriend at Rock Lake pool. Sorry to hear it's filled in but not too surprised.
I worked at Ben Paul's Esso at D street and 4th. I also worked at WKNA radio in Charleston. Left WV for Florida and then New York and am now in Nevada, but still have very fond memories of Rock Lake Pool.
Thanks again.
Steve

Comments: What memories. The pipe yards of McJunkin was my "playground". Us kids played in and around stacked pipes and oil well equipment with full parental approval! Walked the tracks and the rail yards as a matter of course. I could spend hours on this site. It is depressing to see the sterile quality of today's views with the vibrant tapestry and character of yesterday. What happened to us???
