Daniel Boone Hotel 1954

See larger photo HERE
The Daniel Boone Hotel was at
one time, Charleston's finest hotel. Every famous person who ever
visited Charleston (including Elvis) always stayed at the Daniel Boone.
The hotel was opened in 1929 and the manager was the well known
Roger Creel.
These photos however are about the removal
of unsightly power lines in downtown Charleston. In the photo above,
you see the mess of wires that were not only unsightly, but exposed to
the elements whereby power outages were common. An interesting
note to all photos of this era is the one stoplight at every
intersection. Today, there are usually 8 stoplights per
intersection,.

A much more attractive street. Traffic lights now moved to the corners.
I like this photo
because it shows the gas station across the street from the Daniel
Boone. That appears to be a Pure Oil station just like the one at
5 Corners on the West Side. J.C. Penny would later be built on
that spot.
