An Amazing Photograph.
This photgraph was
taken where the old Charleston Moose Lodge and Daniel Boone Park
is. For a long time, I couldn't figure out why all these cars and
a bus were parked that far from town. I finally discovered
why, but first, lets break down this photo in order to get the most
from it.....

Look at those boys! They are right out of a "Our Gang Comedy"! And look at those wonderful old cars.

Great old Atlantic Greyhound bus. But why is IT there?

HERE'S WHY
On Oct 22, 1932,
President Herbert Hoover came to Charleston on his trip across the
country. The event was held at Laidley Field. You must remember
that back then, the field was completely surrounded by homes, so
parking was at a premium. Also, many people took the bus, so there was
little need for giant parking lots like we have today.
|
People had to park
for miles around, and like we do sometime's today, they ran shuttle
buses to the event. It's still amazing, when you consider how far
Daniel Boone Park is, that people had to park that far
aways. And it wasnt just there, it was all over the city,
all the way to the West Side.

SIDE NOTE: Here's an interesting paragraph that was within the article above...
Columbia Blvd was on the West Side where Kanawha Blvd is today, and it wrapped around the mouth of the Elk River.
