Putney School
![Putney School](Putney1962b.jpg)
In
its heyday, the coal-mining town of Putney at the head of Campbells
Creek, had a population of about 1,500 and a workforce of 400 miners
who produced more than 300,000 tons of coal per year.Passenger trains
ran twice a day through the town, which included 100 company-owned
houses, a company store, boardinghouse, community recreational
facility, church, doctor's office and school. The school building
in this photo is amazing, both for it's size, construction, and
closeness to the RR tracks. While many schools were close to
tracks, few were actually below grade like this.
As Putney has
been gone for at least 50 years, there's nothing left but the cemetery.
If you were in Putney today, you wouldn't know it.
