A Little Background On Rock Lake Pool

Rock Lake started life as "The Fountain Pool"

It was the worlds largest artificial concrete pool.

This ad appeared in 1932 as the two owners were attempting to raise more Capital for the new pool.  They had purchased the old C & O Railroad rock quarry as the perfect place to save money on construction.  Another thing to remember is that there were very few man-made pools in the area,  and most people swam in the rivers which were filthy for the most part. The above  article announced the grand opening of the pool for the very first time.

As mentioned above, it was very important to convince the public of how clean the pool was. A lot of people thought that the pools water came directly from the Kanawha River.  Others thought it came from Springs underground.  But they actually filled the pool initially from "the Nitro city water supply", which is a little odd considering the distance.
