THE WHITESVILLE DISASTER

In 1926,  on a warm summer July evening, a Carnival was in the town of Whitesville. It was now getting dark and everyone was having a great time, this being a very secluded little town with not a great deal of entertainment.  During a free show,  many in the crowd gathered on the old swinging bridge across the Coal River to watch a carnival man set himself ablaze and slide into the river on a wire. At that moment,  the bridge gave way.....
